IPL is a hair removal method that works through a pulse of light. The pulse generates heat in the hair follicles and destroys them, so that no hair can ever grow back. Definitive hair removal is possible on every part of the body easily and virtually painlessly with the MedCos IPL method. It is also fast. For example, the average treatment time for the final depilation of underarms or bikini line is only five minutes.

In order to reach the hair follicle, conduction via the pigment in the hair is required. In stages 2 and 3 (see illustration) the hair follicle is not reached and can again create a new hair. That is why several treatments are needed.

In total you need about 8 to 12 treatments for a satisfactory result. In addition, we recommend 1 maintenance treatment per year, for an optimal and long-lasting effect.

Frequently asked questions about IPL hair removal

Does the depilation hurt?

One feels it but it is generally not experienced as pain. Each flash can feel like a small touch to the skin. Of course, some parts of the body are more sensitive than the others, but even on the sensitive parts of the body it is not experienced as pain.

How quickly do I see an effect?

After the third treatment, some of the treated hairs will be released easily after about 10 to 15 days and some bare spots will appear. Some people seem to have more hairs after a treatment, and the growth seems to be faster again. However, this is only an appearance. It is caused by the hair growth cycle changing. The hairs that would usually grow in succession now come to the surface at the same time. Often there are two hairs in one hair follicle. This is a good time for a next treatment because multiple hairs can be tackled at the same time.

How much time should there be between treatments?

Between consecutive treatments lies a period ranging from 6 to 12 weeks. Because of the hair growth cycle several treatments are needed to switch off all hair follicles. The time between treatments depends on the place on the body. Sometimes shorter breaks on the face and longer breaks on the legs.

How long does a treatment take?

The duration of a treatment depends on the surface to be treated. For example, treatment of the armpits will take about 3 minutes total.

How long after the treatment can I sunbathe and why do I have to wait?

After approximately 2 weeks, the treated surfaces may be exposed to the sun or sunbed again. Because your skin will otherwise guard against protection from light by making a lot of pigment, but then blotchy (hyperpigmentation). There may also be sun allergies (itchy red bumps). Therefore, cover the skin with clothing in summer or winter sports, or use a protection factor higher than 30 (sunblock) if exposure to UV light is unavoidable, such as on your face or arms (provided you have been treated there of course). If you leave your face IPL and we strongly recommend to use a day care with mineral SPF both summer and winter. In the winter and even in the car behind glass the UVAS radiate rays on your skin. We recommend the Image Prevention day cream. This is available in our salon. (€ 46.00 for 86 ml). If you are exposed to the sun and tanned, you should wait two to four weeks before the next treatment, until your skin color returns to normal. Sun-kissed skin and IPL really do not go together.

Can I use self-tanning creams or sunbed?

You should not use self-tanners one week before the treatment because it contains a substance that reacts with light. A week after the treatment you can use self-tanning creams or tanning booths again.

Can it be treated with ingrown hairs?

Yes, that is fine. In fact, it is very good against ingrown hair because an inflammation with a curled hair often pops open during treatment and then becomes calmer.

What should I do with the stubble that remains after the treatment?

These continue to grow for 2 to 3 weeks and fall out automatically. Hair that becomes active from the sleep phase simply shaves off, so that we can take it with you in the next treatment. Always remember to shave 1 day before the treatment. Rather not the same day. Your skin may react sensitively to the alcohol and light if you shave the day of the treatment.

Will the hair never return?

No, the hair follicles that have been treated effectively can never produce a hair again. You can assume 80 to 90% hair reduction. If you want to become 100% smooth, that may not be realistic. Unfortunately, there are thousands of hair follicles under our skin that sleep or only produce light down. These can be awakened by hormone changes at a later stage in our life, for example in: pregnancy, menopause, use of certain medications (antibiotics, hormone preparations, doping), disorders in the endocrine system (thyroid gland, adrenal hyperactivity in stress), or at period of much effort.
It means that you can be rid of unwanted body hair for years, but that you may have the misfortune that hair will ever grow again, or that the fluffy residual hairs will become thicker again. So it is wise that you return about 1 or 2 times a year for ‘maintenance service’. However, the hair will never have the same density as before.

Why is hair removal not wise when using some medicines?

Some medicines and herbal preparations make the skin oversensitive to light. If you read the package leaflet of your medicines again, or if you have lost it, look at: A hypersensitivity to strong light can occur with the following medications or ointments: acne (ro-accutane, iso-tretoine, vitamin A ointment), antidepressants, St. John’s wort (Hypericum, brand name for example Kyra), antibiotics or penicillin. Individually, this directive may be deviated from. Namely if you have been using certain medicines for years and have never observed any hypersensitivity to UV light. So never suffer from sun allergy (itching, bumps after sunlight) and never have to close your eyes during normal daylight. In those cases we first do a few test pulses to see how the skin reacts. Anti-inflammatory drugs (eg Prednisone) also do not co-exist with the treatments. Because these inhibit certain cells that just have to become active after the treatment to normalize the skin again.

Do you also treat minors?

When you are young, your body is not finished with making hairs. It is probably still planned (depending on your familial predisposition and hormone level) to grow a lot more hair in many more places, and to allow it to become denser. The depilation (with laser or IPL) may, from a medical point of view, once you have reached your expected body length and / or have a regular cycle. You must come with one of your parents on your first intake so that legal permission can be given. You can only come to the follow-up treatments.

What happens if I have a lot of moles on the skin?

Small moles are not a problem. Major moles are worked around during treatment, we can not flash over them.

Can I shave, epilate or use a depilatory cream in advance?

During the IPL treatment you may not epilate and / or wax, because the hairs are necessary to conduct the effective heat inwards. Shaving is allowed and preferably 1 day before the treatment, even with a disposable razor blade. Do not use razor blades or shaving systems that first pull the hair out of the skin before shaving, as the hair then drops back into the skin. As a result, it can not serve as a guide for the light to be depilated.

Can I use deodorant after treating the armpit?

No, wait a few hours because chemicals can be absorbed by the skin through the heat of the skin.
